He actually does have something in his pocket. No doubt there was more than a little skepticism at Premier Brad Wall‟s declaration this week that his government wants to cap health spending growth at three percent and still meet his objectives of reduced wait times for surgeries. After all, no other political leader had found the elixir that would make such a goal viable. So how could he make such a claim and keep a straight face?
Well, he‟s got something to lean on – a process improvement project championed by his deputy in the health ministry Dan Florizone.

Prior to his arrival in his current office, Florizone chaired the Health Quality Council and ran a rural health region. During that time he encountered a Seattle hospital utilizing the lean concept, a process improvement tool more commonly seen on the floor of manufacturing shops. But the Americans were enjoying a high level of success in applying the principles so he brought them home and began implementing them here....
